UBP calls for BEST’s environmental sustainability blueprint to be embraced
An environmental report by Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce has been endorsed by the United Bermuda Party.Published last month, the blueprint for environmental sustainability makes several recommendations for Bermuda’s sustainability.BEST provided the document to the leaders of the three political parties, saying those aspiring to be policymakers could use it as a reference.Last night, the UBP’s Charlie Swan said that the organisation should be commended for its effort. He praised the blueprint for environmental sustainability as “one of the most well researched and comprehensive reports produced on the subject outside of Government’s own inhouse reports”.Mr Swan added: “BEST's call for constructive feedback and discussion is to be applauded, and heeded.”And he called on the Island's political, business and community leaders to “heed BEST’s call to work together”.He said: “BEST highlights in its conclusions the high level of interconnectivity between our physical environment, our economic environment and our social environments.“In small island states such as ours, the affects of small negative changes in either manifest themselves very quickly...Bermuda has a finite land mass, and an increasing demand on that space.”This means that a high degree of cross-ministry collaboration in policymaking is necessary, he said.“Government’s much touted cross-ministry initiative needs to be functioning efficiently, if it isn't already.”And Mr Swan highlights the report’s policy recommendations such as discouraging speculative residential development, encouraging development on brownfield sites, and “encouraging all Bermudians to develop an energy conscious mindset and embrace renewable energy solutions”.He said: “We in the United Bermuda Party support BEST in its efforts, and applaud them for this report. We have pushed for many of the recommendations this report contains over the years, and will continue to do so.“There are many valid ideas in the BEST report. It is a must read for policymakers, and all Bermudians.”
