PLP chairman Anthony Santucci to step down at party conference

Stepping down: Progressive Labour Party chairman Anthony Santucci

The ruling Progressive Labour Party will have a new chairman after its annual conference which begins next week.A four day affair of speeches, workshops and administrative housekeeping, the annual conference, entitled “Road to Election” will be the party’s last before the general election.A host of speakers, all home grown, will take the podium on two nights at the conference which begins on Monday next week.First run candidates Makai Dickerson, John Gibbons, Diallo Rabain and Lawrence Scott are scheduled to kick off the conference at Dalton E Tucker School. It moves to the Ruth Seaton James Auditorium on Tuesday October 16 when Neville Tyrell, Dale Butler, Dame Jennifer Smith, Deputy Leader Derrick Burgess and Leader Paula Cox will each address the audience. And on Wednesday, the conference is open to delegates and members only as it conducts internal party business at Devonshire Recreation Club. Elections will be held to fill a handful of party officer positions including that of Party Chairman.New candidates Dawn Simmons, Stephen Todd, Vince Ingham and Kim Wilson will be the speakers on the final night of the conference which will be held at Whitney Institute.Current Chairman Anthony Santucci confirmed yesterday that he is not seeking re-election.The positions of Party Leader and Deputy Party Leader are not up for election as per the PLP constitution which now requires that elections for the top two spots be held every four years, after the rules were changed in 2002 under the leadership of Jennifer Smith. The reform meant that Dame Jennifer could not be challenged for the leadership at the party’s annual conference that year. But she was ousted shortly after the 2003 election when 11 members of the parliamentary group she led to victory at the polls refused to support her, forcing her to call a special delegates conference to resolve the matter.Premier Paula Cox and Derrick Burgess were elected Leader and Deputy Leader of the PLP at the party’s annual conference in 2010.
