Brunson, Smith run for OBA
Health Minister Zane DeSilva will likely be challenged by Jon Brunson for the Southampton East seat (district 29) at the next general election, The Royal Gazette understands.Meanwhile, former Deputy Mayor of the City of Hamilton Glen Smith has been canvassing heavily in Devonshire North West, district 14, currently represented by Premier Paula Cox.Neither of the two have been officially unveiled by the One Bermuda Alliance.First time candidate Mr Smith, a businessman, resigned from the Corporation of Hamilton when he was selected as a One Bermuda Alliance candidate in February this year.Ms Cox has represented the area since her first entry into parliament in 1996 when she won a by election in the then- dual seat district of Devonshire North, replacing former party leader the late Frederick Wade.In 2003, Ms Cox beat off United Bermuda Party challenger Christian Dunleavy by a 332 vote majority, but in the 2007 election when the opposition party ran Alan Marshall, the majority was reduced to 277.Mr Brunson is an approved OBA candidate and, according to insiders, could end up runnning in district 29. His candidacy would mark a return to electoral politics.Mr Brunson was unable to comment when contacted by The Royal Gazette yesterday. Mr Smith is off the Island but confirmed in a brief telephone call that he will be contesting in district 14.An avid sportsman, Mr Brunson is most recently known as a co-founder of Saving Children and Revealing Secrets, a child sexual abuse prevention charity.He was first elected under the United Bermuda Party banner to represent Southampton West Central, or district 31, in the 2003 general election when he collected 496 votes against the PLP’s Michael Scott who scored 367.In 2007, Southampton West Central voters sent him back to parliament with 548 votes against Marc Bean’s 406 votes.But Mr Brunson stepped down in 2008 and was replaced by the UBP’s Charles Swan when a by election was held in December that year.Mr DeSilva first entered Parliament in 2007, by ousting United Bermuda Party MP David Dodwell from the Southampton East Central seat with a 48 vote majority.Boundary changes which moved about 400 of his constituents led him to seek re-election as a Southampton East MP for the coming election.Long time MP House Speaker Stanley Lowe, the current MP for Southampton East, is retiring from politics.
