MPs pay tributes and give thanks

Yesterday’s House of Assembly session began with a minute’s silence in honour of trailblazing former MP Ralph Marshall who died aged 85 in September.Mr Marshall was also remembered during the congratulations and obituaries section of proceedings.Kim Swan, of the United Bermuda Party, said: “I would like a suitable letter sent [to his family] to reflect his years of service.”Mr Marshall, of Southampton, was one of the United Bermuda Party’s first parliamentarians. He blazed a trail for the Portuguese community when he formed architectural and civil engineering firm Marshall Bernardo Partnership shortly after returning home from a stint of studying and work abroad, making him the first Bermudian of Portuguese descent to establish a profession on the Island.He was also Bermuda’s first Portuguese-Bermudian legislator, and the first Bermudian to serve on the Executive of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.Mr Swan also wished letters of condolence to be sent to the families of two deceased golfers Eardley Jones and Alora Rabain.He said Ms Rabain, from Warwick, “played a very integral part in my life and development in golf” and was an “outstanding golfer”.Mr Jones was Ms Rabain’s partner in a champion-winning mixed foursome and was credited with integrating golf in Bermuda. He died last month.Mr Swan also paid tribute to businessman Kirby Brackstone who died suddenly at the age of 43 at his Paget home last month.“He leaves to mourn a very young family. It’s very sad timing,” observed Mr Swan.Government MP Glenn Blakeney sent congratulations to the organisers of the Bermuda Corporate Games, held earlier this month, and the Carifta Games, held earlier this year. “They were very very successful events” he said.Mr Blakeney also lauded the PGA Golf Classic.St George’s North MP Dame Jennifer Smith paid tribute to the first female mayor of St George’s, Lois Perinchief, who died on Thursday at the age of 86.“Many will speak about her and her contributions to St George’s and to Bermuda as a Country,” she said.She also paid tribute to teaching legend Rosalind Robinson who died recently at the age of 102.“She was certainly a woman about whom reams of books can be written,” said Dame Jennifer.Dame Jennifer also wished to remember pioneer sailor Howard Lee, who died over the summer, aged 77, after a long illness. She said he passed on his love for the sport to “many young people”.She paid tribute to the late Hazel Christopher as “a champion for the Jamaican community in Bermuda and a champion of Bermuda in Jamaica”.She went on to offer her congratulations to local eye specialist Leonard Teye-Botchway who was recently appointed as the Honorary Consul-General for Ghana in Bermuda.Charles Swan MP also paid tribute to Mr Lee, Mr Jones and Ms Christopher.“Mr Jones played an integral part in the golfing career of my son and numerous other young boys in this country,” he said.“Howard Lee was a colleague of mine in the Comet community. I sailed with him many times, he was someone to be cherished.”He went on to ask that Rosemarie Souza, of Seymour Farm Road, Southampton, be remembered with a letter of condolence from Parliamentarians to her family.
