PLP’s minibus is not a Govt vehicle
With election season heating up, the sight of a green minibus calling for votes for the governing Progressive Labour Party drew a chorus of concern. The green-painted bus proclaims the Party’s slogan ‘Standing Strong’ and urges ‘Vote PLP’.However, a Party spokesman said the “PLP bus” is not a Government vehicle. The bus that has been seen around the Island at some community events is “a private vehicle and not a member of the Government's transportation fleet,” he said.“The M in the licence plate reflects that it is a minibus, and not a part of the Ministry of Transport's fleet."The season has so far seen PLP supporters criticise the Opposition One Bermuda Alliance’s use of foam cricket balls for advertising at Cup Match — and, last month, Opposition cries of foul play after OBA posters were ordered to be taken down from bus shelters. In response to the latest suspicions over advertising, a spokesman for the Ministry of Transport told The Royal Gazette that vehicle “M2582 is a privately owned minibus which falls in the public service vehicle category”.And a Transport Control Department spokesman said the vehicle didn’t appear to have contravened any laws by showing its Party colours.Stipulations in Bermuda’s Motor Car Act which limit the area of advertising that a vehicle can display do not include minibuses in the category of “restricted motor cars”, he said.
