UWI postgrad course scholarships available
The University of the West Indies will soon be offering another postgraduate scholarship for qualified Bermudians, according to the Ministry of Education. The first eligible Bermudian student selected for the programme will receive a scholarship covering tuition fees for four years and a two-year stipend of around $10,000 per year.Speaking at a press conference, Education Minister Dame Jennifer Smith said that UWI intends to launch postgraduate scholarships for suitably qualified persons from contributing countries, including Bermuda, in fields relevant to the needs of their country. The postgraduate students would spend one year on a residential campus learning, followed by three years of research leading to a PhD degree.Once the proposal is in place, a total of six scholarships will be available for Bermudians at UWI, including four undergraduate and two postgraduate.Dame Jennifer said: “I am excited about the possibilities that could result from this proposal, particularly at a time when students are seeking funding for further education.“This will provide yet another avenue for Bermudians to fully develop their educational potential by accessing the highest tier of education and, best of all, they will return to give us the benefit of their expertise in an area of critical need to Bermuda.“As we develop the criteria around this proposal, we will keep the public informed and I look forward to the day when we can name the individual who will be the beneficiary of this fantastic opportunity.”Government announced in 2010 that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with the school, which has campuses in Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad, in an effort to make secondary education more accessible.
