PLP vows to enhance bus and ferry services
Transport Minister Walter Roban has vowed that bus and ferry services will be enhanced if the Progressive Labour Party is voted back into Government. But Mr Roban could not give a commitment that fares would not be raised.“I cannot commit to that at this time, but there certainly is no plan to. I can tell you that now. There is no plan to raise fares on any of our residents at all.”The Minister was also unable to answer questions about the state of the public transportation system’s finances.“I can tell you that we run our ferries and buses on a model of making provision for them to provide the best possible service and that they are well maintained and that they do what we plan for them to do which is to move people from A to B efficiently and safely. That is the primary focus. Yes, there are clearly expenditures associated with my Ministry — $79 million this past year — and that goes to making sure that those services are provided.”Mr Roban said that new buses would be purchased by a PLP Government. “We’re looking at options on how we can be more innovative with that — taking on more eco-friendly options because, yes, fuel is a big expense.”Asked why Government had not purchased eco-friendly buses over the last 14 years to save costs, the Minister said fuel costs only became a major priority in recent years.“Everybody is now looking at fuel as an issue,” he said. The governing party is also looking at opening up entrepreneurial opportunities at the airport.“We hope to ensure that smaller, new businesses opportunities are created for people rather than necessarily just the legacy businesses of, perhaps liquor and retail.”Mr Roban’s comments came at a press conference highlighting his Ministry’s achievements and platform proposals. In prepared remarks, he said another PLP Government would attract “appropriately sized” cruise ships for Hamilton and St George’s and expand airlift to Europe, the Caribbean, GCC countries, The Azores and Latin America.“We will acquire additional ferry lift to expand the service that we are already providing. We will work with minibuses to provide shuttle services and enhance and complement our already good transportation system,” he stated.More entrepreneurial opportunities will be created at the airport and cameras will be installed on the buses to make them safer, he added. The PLP also proposes to “develop a joint strategy to market Bermuda as a key centre in maritime and aviation services” and redevelop the 60-year-old airport.“Transportation services are vital to our economy and what I and so many others want to know is whether the transportation projects like we have proposed will be on the chopping block for the OBA’s Cuts and Pain Commission.”Mr Roban said that the OBA would have to engage in deep and radical cuts if they are to fulfil their promises.“What will the OBA Cuts Commission put on the chopping block? Will they cut salary? Will they cut benefits that many of our people are relying on to get through these challenging times?” he asked.Mr Roban was referring to the One Bermuda Alliance’s proposed Spending and Government Efficiency Commission which the Opposition party says will focus on making Government “more efficient, more cost effective, more transparent and more user friendly”.
