A final rally for the Progressive Labour Party brought about 350 party faithful to Berkeley Institute field tonight.Former Premiers Ewart Brown, Alex Scott and Dame Jennifer Smith were among the guests of the night, which saw the party's 11 central candidates take the stage to thumping music before a sea of green-wearing supporters."Send a message on Monday," Dr Brown told them.The gathering began with an introduction of candidates."We have come too far to go back," candidate for constituency 23 Darius Tucker told the crowd. "After coming up the rough side, and now on the top, we're not going now."Said PLP executive officer Dawn Simmons, running for constituency 22: "On the night of December 17, Paget East will no longer be an Opposition stronghold."Supporters sat before a series of local singers and a fiery opening prayer by pastor Dean Smith. The after-rally celebration is expected to run to 1am."Will you rely on those who dress in red, or those who dress in green?" Pembroke West hopeful Vince Ingham asked the crowd. "Our economy will bring lots of green."And constituency 18's candidate David Burt rubbished the OBA's jobs plan."There are some people elsewhere in the Country who have only 20 people at their event," he declared.He added: "On Monday they're going to have another five years to come up with a new name."Walton Brown, candidate for constituency 17, said: "A vote for the PLP is a vote for progress."Dr Brown brought the crowd to its feet.He noted that an OBA candidate had referred to the topic of race as "a distraction"."Tell me one thing that has dominated your life and existence more than race," he said. "That's why they want us to stop talking about it."He repeated his call for supporters never to allow others to write their history.Dame Jennifer and Mr Scott also followed with five minute addresses.Reiterating the phrase "black surrogates", used by several of the speakers, Mr Scott noted that the United Bermuda Party, formed to "crush the PLP", was no more.He reminded the audience that the PLP's 50th anniversary was near."We need you to honour the names of all those who have gone before," Mr Scott said. "Stand strong."It was, as constituency 15 hopeful Walter Roban said, The last rally in a long journey."Glenn Blakeney, for constituency 13, finished up with a call to family and urged the audience not to fall for "the smiling faces lying to the races".Party candidates were called forward by MC Owen Darrell for a roll call to conclude the event.
