Veteran MP Grant Gibbons scored his fifth successive election victory in his Paget East constituency with a reduced majority.The One Bermuda Alliance MP garnered 699 votes, seeing off the challenge of Progressive Labour Party candidate Dawn Simmons, who secured 243 votes in the opposition stronghold.Dr Gibbons’ 456-vote margin of victory was a little short of the 522-vote majority he achieved in defeating the PLP’s Davida Morris at the polls five years ago.Dr Gibbons was first elected to the House of Assembly in a by-election in July 1994, when he won the Paget East seat.Former Opposition Leader Dr Gibbons served as Finance Minister in a past United Bermuda Party Government. A Rhodes Scholar with master of arts in philosophy, politics and economics from Oxford University, Dr Gibbons also earned a PhD in organic chemistry at Harvard University.Ms Simmons, who chaired the PLP campaign in 2007, has also worked in the Department of Education, the Ministry of Finance and spent 13 years at XL Group in various roles in the claims and underwriting department.She has also served as Parent Teacher Student Association president at all three institutions of which her son has attended — West End Primary, Sandys Secondary Middle School, and currently The Berkeley Institute.Voter turnout totalled 73.1 percent, as 942 registered voters cast their ballots.RESULTS:Grant Gibbons (OBA): 699Dawn Simmons (PLP): 243
