Pembroke West

Jeanne Atherden called her win in Pembroke West ‘one of the biggest’ in her political career as she cruised to a comfortable 255 vote win in the Opposition stronghold. One Bermuda Alliance candidate Mrs Atherden claimed 530 votes.Progressive Labour Party Vincent Ingham finished second with 275 votes, while independents Erwin Adderley and Meredith Stapff ended with 28 and 25 votes, respectively.Stating that voters had called for change, Mrs Atherden embraced the victory she claimed for the new ruling party.“People called for change and that is hopefully what we get when the votes are all in,” she said. “I did a lot of work and had a great team behind me so I’m pleased with how everything went.“This is one of my biggest wins in politics and going forward, to be able to help out Bermuda in going a new direction is going to be one of my biggest challenges to date.”The former Shadow Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Senator also had to beat brother and independent Mr Adderley for the seat, doing so in comfortable fashion. The same can’t be said for the PLP, who has now lost this particular constituency in the previous three elections in landslide numbers.Mr Ingham was gracious in defeat and vowed to continue to work for the community in any capacity should he be called upon by Government. He said: “Congratulations to Mrs Atherden on her win, but this won’t put me down. I love this community and should I be called upon to help where I can I would love to help.”The two independents were not available for comment after the final total was announced. There were no spoiled ballots, while voter turnout was 72 percent, 858 of 1,191 registered voters casting ballots.RESULTS:Jeanne Atherden (OBA) 530Vincent Ingham (PLP) 275Erwin Adderley (IND) 28Meredith Stapff (IND) 25
