St George’s West

Twenty-six-year-old political newcomer Nandi Davis helped decide the country’s election last night, winning St George’s West in a nail-biter of a vote.Representing the One Bermuda Alliance, Ms Davis won the constituency by just four votes. She jumped up in joy at the result around midnight, one of the last constituencies to report. It was only in the final quarter of vote counting that she edged ahead. The Progressive Labour Party’s Renee Ming, who had led the vote count in the first half, was hugged by supporters and left the polling station right after the result. She only stepped into the ring in mid-November after John Gibbons stepped down for personal reasons.Incumbent Kim Swan, who ran as an Independent candidate, chose not to be present in the polling station for the vote count. The former United Bermuda Party leader said: “Personally, I have no regrets and would like to thank my family, friends and supporters for their support, sacrifice and hard work. The people have spoken and I respect their judgment.”As supporters hugged her and shouted with joy, Ms Davis said: “It was so close. It was neck and neck right to the end. I am shocked.”Turnout was 928 votes in a district of 1,280 people with three spoiled ballots. There were around 1,280 voters registered to vote in the constituency this year.In 2007 there were 1,286 voters registered and 865 voted, giving a turnout of 74.8 percent.RESULTSNandi Davis (OBA) 359 votesRenee Ming (PLP) 355Kim Swan (IND) 214
