On a night of upsets, the OBA’s Mark Pettingill swept to victory by 141 votes in Warwick North East, unseating close friend Dale Butler in the process.Mr Pettingill returns to House of Assembly for a second successive term, having won Warwick West as a member of the UBP in 2007.Describing himself as “over the moon”, Mr Pettingill also confessed to having a touch of hunter’s remorse at ending his friend’s 14-year tenure as Warwick North East’s sitting MP.“Dale’s a close friend, and he’s a great guy,” he said. “I want to pay tribute to him, he’s been a great MP for the constituency. When we were canvassing all we heard was ‘Dale’s a great guy, Dale’s a great guy’, but people wanted change in the Country.“I want to thank him for his service to the Country and I hope he will continue to be of service.“I’m over the moon, over the moon, my heart’s beating so fast.”For his part Mr Butler wished Mr Pettingill well, saying he had no doubt that the area’s newest MP would discharge his new responsibilities “honourably”.“I wish to thank my family and close friends for their love, encouragement and understanding. To all those who sacrificed their time to assist with my campaign in ways too numerous to list, I thank your for your generosity.“Mr Mark Pettingill and I became friends while serving together in Parliament. I know that he too wishes to see a brighter future for our Island home, and I am confident that he will discharge the responsibilities entrusted in him by the electorate honourably.”There were four rejected ballots.
