Members of the Bermuda Progressive Labour Party are free to accept appointments to Government Boards, the party said on Monday.It is unclear what progress the new Government has made in confirming the board appointments most of which expired at year’s end, as Government has not responded to queries submitted on Monday.But the PLP said in a statement that its members could serve, if asked.“No directive has been issued for PLP members regarding service on Government boards. Members can make their own individual decisions about whether they choose to serve on government boards,” the party’s statement reads.The stance marks a departure from previous PLP policy, since its founding in 1963.During its first stint in opposition the PLP discouraged its members from serving on Government Boards.“They felt that by being a member of the government board you are assisting the government to maintain power,” explained long time PLP member LaVerne Furbert.But Ms Furbert indicated that there had been no discussion about the policy change.“The policy should still be in place or at least have a discussion about it.”
