Health issues expected to be to the fore in Parliament
Health issues and the ongoing furore over the proposed closure of the Lamb Foggo Urgent Care Centre are likely to dominate today’s Motion to Adjourn in Parliament.
Today’s House of Assembly will also see the tabling of the National Drug Control Act 2013 by National Security Minister Michael Dunkley.
The legislation, promised in February’s Throne Speech, will clarify the role of the Department of National Drug Control, including a five-year drug control plan.
Mr Dunkley conceded that the Spending and Government Efficiency (SAGE) Commission’s final report had recommended dispensing with the Department altogether.
However he said the suggestion was “not one I can support at this time”.
MPs will get notice of a raft of leases and agreements made by the Corporations of Hamilton and St George.
That list will include the City of Hamilton’s controversial 262-year lease of the City’s waterfront to Allied Development Partners — plus the 120-year lease of a lot by Par-la-Ville Hotel and Residences Limited.
Under the recent Municipalities Amendment Act such agreements must be submitted to the Home Affairs Minister.
According to Government Whip Cole Simons, the House of Assembly will also see two pieces of tax treaty legislation up for debate.
The USA-Bermuda Tax Convention Amendment Act, 2013 and the International Cooperation (Tax Information Agreements) Amendment Act, 2013 were both tabled last week, and are tipped to be passed in today’s session.
Also up for a second reading is the Firearms Amendment (No. 2) Act 2013.
