House of Assembly: Burgess slams PLP critics
Derrick Burgess, the former Deputy Leader of the Progressive Labour Party, has launched a scathing attack on both his and his party’s critics.
The Member of Parliament for Hamilton East lashed out at the end of Friday’s House of Assembly session over “fabricated stories” that had been circulated about himself and other members of the PLP.
Mr Burgess lamented the existence of “the two Bermudas”, where people were judged differently depending on what political party they supported.
His comments came almost a week after Premier Michael Dunkley denounced the PLP’s record in Government, accusing the previous administration of mishandling the Island’s assets in a heated exchange during the Budget debate.
“Over the past year, we have heard stories, innuendos and allegations about the former Government,” Mr Burgess said.
“I have spoken about the two Bermudas: depending on what particular organisation you belong to, that is the way you are treated.
“In Bermuda if you repeat something more than three times, it takes on a life ... it is meant to publicly lynch the victim.
“They have done it here. They fabricated the cedar beams in Dr Brown’s house.
“They fabricated that story because they knew what it would do.
“They knew there was no beams. [But] no one has never apologised.”
Although Mr Burgess did not name names during his fiery speech, the Auditor General’s department as well as the Bermuda Police Service came in for severe criticism.
He also referred to a string of incidents in which he alleged that authorities had unfairly targeted him and other PLP members, including the Auditor General’s report on the Bermuda Land Development Corporation, the White’s Island lease that was given to the anti-gang group Cartel, and the bogus cheques that were later the subject of a defamation actions by Mr Burgess and Dr Ewart Brown, the former Premier. Mr Burgess added: “Why do we have these two Bermudas, depending on what party you belong to, that is how you are treated?
“As long as you keep accusing us of corruption and incompetence, we will speak about this.
“This country better start treating people as people, not by what political party they belong to.”
