Guest workers were warned this morning that their work permits would be revoked if they do not obey orders to self-quarantine.

Wayne Caines, the Minister of National Security and co-chairman of the Emergency Measures Organisation, said everyone coming into Bermuda was obliged to stay at home for two weeks.

In an “urgent advisory” related to Covid-19, he explained: “As I have previously stressed the health, safety and wellbeing of all our residents is paramount.

“As the public is aware, as of today, March 17, 2020, all individuals inclusive of guest workers arriving into Bermuda are mandatorily required to self-quarantine for 14 days.

“This means — stay home. Practise social distancing.

“More specifically any guest worker found to be violating the self-quarantine order will immediately have their work permit revoked.”

has asked the Government what power it will use to enforce self-quarantining for people arriving in Bermuda.

Air passengers were strongly advised to self-quarantine in guidance issued by the Government on Sunday.

David Burt, the Premier, wrote on Twitter later that day: “I will request to the Speaker of the House and the President of the Senate, that both houses of Bermuda’s Legislature meet tomorrow to pass the laws required to give the @BdaGovernment the power to enforce the newly announced self-quarantine effective March 17.”

However, no such legislation was tabled yesterday.

A Ministry of Health spokeswoman said today: “Legislation is being prepared under section 107(a) of the Public Health Act 1949 to enforce any necessary isolation and precautions to be taken by persons with confirmed or suspected Covid-19.

“The legislation is being drafted and will be available in due course. It is separate and distinct from yesterday’s amendment giving power to close certain establishments if needed.”

Residents were advised to follow the Government’s health and public services advisories about the Covid-19 pandemic.
