Mr Biden replaces President Donald Trump after an election and transition which have been among the most controversial in US history.
President Trump plans to leave Washington on the morning of Biden’s swearing-in, becoming the first modern-day president to skip his successor’s inauguration. Vice President Pence has said he will attend Biden’s ceremony.
In the final hours of his presidency, Donald Trump has planned an event at Joint Base Andrews to launch a day full of symbolism as a new administration comes to power.
President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala D. Harris will take the oath of office on the steps of the U.S. Capitol at approximately noon E.T. and then Biden will deliver his inaugural address.
