SJB renews calls for OBA to remove Jones from Senate
An Opposition senator is facing renewed pressure to resign after publicly supporting former US President Donald Trump.
Senator Marcus Jones claimed he was a “staunch” supporter of Mr Trump in a Facebook post last month, adding that he would pray for America and the former president.
The post prompted pressure group Social Justice Bermuda to call for senator Jones’ resignation for supporting “right wing populist positions”.
The group has now gone on the offensive again, claiming it will keep the issue in the public spotlight until the One Bermuda Alliance takes action.
In a statement, SJB said: “We have reached out to the One Bermuda Alliance for an update on their refusal to remove Marcus Jones from the Senate, but they have not responded.
“We advised the OBA that, if they continue to avoid taking action, we will continue to remind the community that Marcus Jones is unfit to serve in the Senate and will issue regular statements to that effect.”
The statement also claimed that Senator Jones had listened to Dutch Sheets – “a self-declared prophet” who “spouts conspiracy theories”.
The statement continued: “It’s clear that senator Jones’ Facebook post goes beyond ‘different political views’.
“It shows he’s been indoctrinated into cultish beliefs that are in a territory beyond fact and reason. We cannot ignore the context of this dangerous right−wing extremism, which has been declared a security threat.
“His position clearly calls his judgment into question and we are once again calling on the OBA to remove this man from the Senate.”
The One Bermuda Alliance has so far not responded to SJB’s latest demand.
