Premier lays wreath to honour ‘great friend of Bermuda’, Sir David Amess
A murdered British MP has been honoured by the Premier at a wreath-laying ceremony at Westminster.
David Burt, in London for a UK Overseas Territories summit, was joined at the remembrance event for Sir David Amess by Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the House of Commons.
Sir David, who was killed in his Southend West, Essex, constituency last month as he held a constituency surgery, was chairman of the Britain-Bermuda All-Party Parliamentary Group since its creation in 2015.
Mr Burt said that the Conservative Party MP had helped make Bermuda’s voice heard in the UK and further afield.
He added: “Sir David was a great friend to Bermuda – dedicated and hard-working – someone who did his best to raise our cause in the wider world.
“We are devastated by his death and saddened beyond measure for his family, which is why I wanted to lay a wreath in Parliament on behalf of the people of Bermuda.”
The wreath was laid in the grounds of the Palace of Westminster.
Mr Burt is in the capital for the annual Overseas Territories Joint Ministerial Council, which involves the political leaders from the Territories and UK government ministers.
