Governor declares public holiday for Queen’s funeral

The Governor has declared that Monday will be a public holiday to coincide with the day of mourning and the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II

The Governor declared yesterday that Monday will be a public holiday to mark the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

The move brings Bermuda in line with other Overseas Territories such as the Cayman Islands.

It was also announced that Rena Lalgie, the Governor, and David Burt, the Premier, will attend the funeral in London.

A statement from Government House posted on Facebook read: “Her Excellency the Governor, Ms Rena Lalgie, has today signed a proclamation declaring Monday, 19 September 2022 a public holiday in Bermuda to coincide with the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

“The state funeral will be held at Westminster Abbey, following which a committal service will take place in St George’s Chapel in Windsor.”

As well as going to the Westminster Abbey service, Ms Lalgie and Mr Burt, with other Overseas Territories representatives, will attend the lying in state and a reception hosted by King Charles III, a government spokeswoman said.

Monday will also be a public holiday in Britain, while countries where the Queen was head of state, such as Australia and New Zealand, will hold special days to remember the monarch’s life later in the month.
