Hayward’s economic road map takes centre stage in HoA
A road map for the island’s next four years of economic development is to go before legislators today for debate.
Also on the agenda for today’s sitting of the House of Assembly is the Child Day Care Allowance Amendment Act 2023.
Both items have been brought by Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour.
The Economic Development Strategy Bermuda 2023-27 was announced by Mr Hayward in May as the blueprint to “provide a strategic framework that will guide Bermuda to sustainable economic growth and development”.
The daycare legislation promises to broaden access to a subsidy that at present only goes to households earning $55,000 or less a year to receive $800 per child per month.
The legislation would expand access for households with a gross annual income of up to $65,000 to apply for a maximum monthly allowance of $900 per eligible child.
For those earning up to $97,000, it will be $700 a month per child.
Households with an income of up to $130,000 will be able to seek $500 per child.
Mr Hayward this month characterised the move as a lifeline for parents struggling with the island’s rising costs.
MPs will get the Bermuda Ombudsman’s annual report for 2022, to be tabled this morning, along with the Bermuda Hospitals Board annual report for 2019-20 and the Human Right Commission’s annual report for 2022-23.
Tinée Furbert, the Minister of Social Development and Seniors, will give details on the HRC report in a ministerial statement.
David Burt is to deliver an update on the Government’s negotiations with its largest union partners.
Ms Furbert is also scheduled to speak on a United Nations programme on women’s equality.
The “Building Back Equal through Innovative Financing for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment” entails a $1 million investment across two countries – Bermuda and the Bahamas — to build gender parity.
