House preview: MPs to debate land purchase near St Regis
Bermuda’s plans to join the Caribbean Community and Common Market, which was called into question by Sir John Swan, the former premier, will be addressed today in the House of Assembly by Walter Roban, the Deputy Premier.
It comes in the wake of sharp criticism levelled by Mr Roban at Sir John, and a statement issued by David Burt on Wednesday evening responding to Sir John’s concerns over the move from associate to full membership in Caricom.
The Premier will also speak on the Joint Ministerial Council that he attended this month in London with other leaders of British Overseas Territories.
Jason Hayward, the economy and labour minister, is to update the House on the Throne Speech pledge to establish the Southeast Hamilton Economic Empowerment Zone.
MPs have two items to debate on today’s order paper.
A motion brought by Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the public works minister, will go before the House for the purchase of a strip of land at Secretary Lane in St George’s.
The property has led to a dispute over right of access between elderly widow Gardine Gibbons and the owners of the St Regis resort concerning a golf cart path cutting across private property.
Legislators will debate the Anti-Doping in Sport Act 2023, updating the island’s legislation and establishing the Bermuda Sport Anti-Doping Authority.
One piece of legislation will be tabled to await debate at a later session, brought by Mr Hayward: the Bermuda Immigration and Protection (Prohibition Order) Amendment Act 2023.
