David Burt attends Caricom leaders meeting
The Premier is in talks with heads of Caribbean governments over plans for mutual growth in the region.
David Burt, also the Minister of Finance, is one of 20 leaders taking part in the 46th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Caricom Heads of Government.
The meeting, which runs until Thursday, is being held in Georgetown, Guyana, hosted by Irfaan Ali, the Guyanese president.
Speaking on the meeting, Mr Burt said: “It is an honour to represent Bermuda at the 46th Caricom Heads of Government Meeting.
“Climate action and energy sustainability will feature heavily on the agenda and we expect to provide updates on Bermuda's progress in that area and the steps we've taken since COP28.
“Additionally, there have been some key developments here in Bermuda, such as the passage of our Corporate Income Tax legislation, that I am eager to update my fellow heads of government on.
“Ultimately, our participation signals Bermuda's commitment to regional co-operation and mutual development and we welcome the opportunity to strengthen the bonds that unite us.”
The meetings take place twice a year and involve 15 member states of the Caribbean Community and the five associate members.
It serves as a platform for government leaders to discuss and decide on regional development and co-operation efforts.
Topics often discussed include national security, the economy, food and nutrition security and environmental protection.
Mr Burt participated in the meeting’s opening ceremony on Sunday and met David Rutley, the UK Minister for Overseas Territories.
The two discussed the UK’s Overseas Territory strategy and the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee visit to Bermuda.
Bermuda has been an associate member of Caricom since 2003, which has granted the island opportunities in sport, educational and skill development, business and science.
Mr Burt is accompanied by government backbencher Christopher Famous and is scheduled to return on Thursday.
