Opposition announces Lateef Trott for Hamilton East
The One Bermuda Alliance has named Lateef Trott, the former Bermuda cricketer, as its candidate for Constituency 5, Hamilton East.
The latest opposition electoral contender is to challenge Derrick Burgess, the Progressive Labour Party’s incumbent MP.
Mr Trott, 29, who attended CedarBridge Academy, holds a bachelor’s degree in theology from Cica-International University and Seminary, as well as a master’s degree in biblical exposition, for which he is also studying towards a doctorate.
A fast bowler following in the footsteps of his father, Clarkie Trott, Mr Trott played domestically for Eastern Counties champions Bailey’s Bay Cricket Club and appeared in Cup Match for St George’s.
Mr Trott volunteered with King Edward VII Memorial Hospital’s ambulance service and emergency department as a teenager, and St John Ambulance.
At present he is employed as a parking enforcement officer for the Corporation of Hamilton.
Mr Trott, who was raised in Harlem Heights, said running as a candidate for the area was an obvious choice, and encouraged young people to get involved in the island’s politics.
He said: “We need more young strong men and women who are not afraid of being in the forefront armed with a desire to create a better Bermuda.”
Mr Trott said he hoped to offer “a consistent presence within the area that is overlooked”.
“It’s important to give people the opportunity to be heard, and to not only see that you care, but feel it as well.”
He added: “Many young adults are willing to engage in politics because Bermuda needs participation, which is a fundamental part of citizenship.
“It is the process by which the young people of our generation can influence decision-making which affects their lives to bring about positive and meaningful change.”
