City of Hamilton plan nears finish line

City of Hamilton looking west

The plan to revamp the City of Hamilton will be accepted by the end of the year, the Cabinet Office minister said on Friday.

Public consultation for the Draft City of Hamilton Plan 2024 ended last month with 19 formal submissions made, with only one objection.

Vance Campbell, the Minister for the Cabinet Office, told MPs in the House of Assembly that the overall level of approval was a testament to the Department of Planning’s commitment to openness.

He said: “I strongly believe that it is of critical importance for people to participate in the preparation of land use plans as these documents are used to shape the spaces and places that we interact with every day in life.

“Furthermore, robust and meaningful consultation is how we test concepts, reach consensus and achieve buy-in.

“Ultimately, for plans to be successful, people need to know that they have been part of the process and their opinions have been valued.”

The blueprint for an overhaul of Hamilton was released last year, and opened for public consultation this year between February 23 and April 26.

The consultation, the second and longest part of the plan’s three-step roll-out, involved town hall meetings, pop-up information sessions, and outreach through social and traditional media channels.

The draft plan is expected to be adopted by December.
