October by-election called for Sandys North
A by-election is to take place on October 4 for the Sandys North seat, vacated by the resignation of Kathy Lynn Simmons last week.
The announcement from the Parliamentary Registry Office was shared yesterday by the Government.
A spokeswoman added that Tenia Woolridge, the Parliamentary Registrar, “advised that further details will be provided once the Writs of Election have been issued”.
She said: “Until such time, voters are encouraged to check to verify that their registration details are up to date, and to ensure their eligibility to vote in the upcoming by-election.”
For more information on voter registration or the by-election process, visit www.elections.gov.bm or call the Parliamentary Registry Office on 293-8683.
Ms Simmons resigned as an MP after she also stepped down from the position of Attorney-General and Minister of Legal Affairs and Constitutional Reform.
The One Bermuda Alliance’s approved candidate for the vacant Constituency 36 is Carl Neblett.
The Progressive Labour Party said last week that its candidate for Sandys North would be announced in due course.
The by-election will mark the island’s third in 12 months.
Smith’s North voters chose Robert King in May after a three-way contest for the seat with Lindsay Simmons, of the PLP, and Sir John Swan, the former premier, who threw his hat in the ring as an independent.
It was prompted by the departure from politics of Michael Dunkley, a former premier.
Similarly, the resignation last year of Cole Simons, the former Leader of the Opposition, sparked the October 2023 by-election for his seat in Smith’s South.
It was retained by the OBA when Ben Smith won the constituency against the PLP challenger, Mischa Fubler.
