Public reminded to give feedback on clean-air laws
Residents were reminded that they can give feedback as part of a consultation on new clean-air laws.
People have until the end of the month to make submissions about the Clean Air Amendment Bill.
A Ministry of Home Affairs spokesman said: “The ministry emphasised the importance of community involvement in shaping legislation that will significantly impact air quality and environmental health.”
The Clean Air Amendment Bill aims to refine the limits of pollutants to help reduce acute and chronic risks to the public.
Concerns have been raised about emissions from Belco’s North Power Station as well as emissions from cars.
“Once the consultation period concludes, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will carefully review all feedback on the draft Bill, with contributions from the Attorney-General's Chambers,” the spokesman said.
The revised Bill is expected to be tabled later in September 2024.
“Public participation is a cornerstone of democratic governance and is essential for crafting effective and comprehensive legislation,” the spokesman added.
“The ministry urges individuals, businesses and organisations to share their views and help shape a future with cleaner air and a healthier environment.”
The Bermuda Clean Air Coalition; Bermuda Environmental Sustainability Taskforce; and environmental consultancy firm Earth Forward Group earlier called for an extension of the original three-week consultation period, which the Government initially rejected.
However, the Government back tracked and the consultation deadline, originally scheduled for July 10, was extended.
Residents can submit feedback through forum.gov.bm/en/projects/clean-air-amendment-bill.
Submissions can also be e-mailed directly to pollutioncontrol@gov.bm.
