Premier pledges relief package as MPs return to House
The Premier is to announce a raft of programmes designed to tackle serious social problems when MPs return to the House of Assembly on Friday.
David Burt, who also serves as the Minister of Finance, made a promise in July to deliver a midyear review of the national Budget, which would include measures taken to improve the lives of Bermudians.
Today, Mr Burt said that while the economy was progressing well, he understood that many on-island continued to struggle.
He added: “We are listening. Even though there is much progress and much going right with Bermuda, not enough Bermudians feel the benefits of our growing economy. We are committed to changing that.
“In my address to Bermuda in July, I said that ministers would be working throughout the summer to bring a package that meets the community’s need for additional resources to tackle antisocial behaviour and confront a mental health crisis.
“The people of Bermuda will now see the results and reap the benefits of that work.”
The measures, according to Mr Burt, will focus on public safety, community service and additional resources for education and social work.
He added that these initiatives were part of a broader strategy to assist the Bermuda public.
“We are focused on real solutions that improve the everyday lives of Bermudians,” he said.
“From supporting the most vulnerable in our community to improving public safety and mental health support, we are working to build a better Bermuda with fairness, opportunity and care for all.”
The full agenda will be revealed when Parliament reconvenes on Friday and on September 27, when the Cabinet is to outline specific measures to be implemented as part of the midyear review.
Mr Burt encouraged residents to stay engaged and informed.
The Premier concluded: “Our goal is simple — to make sure that Bermuda’s success is felt by all Bermudians, and we will not stop until we achieve this vision.”
