Madeiros urges insurers to prioritise mental health

The director of a wellness centre urged insurers to treat mental health needs as equally important to physical health.

Kelly Madeiros, the managing director of Solstice, said this action by insurers was “key to removing barriers to care and allowing more Bermudians to access the support they need”.

Her comments come after David Burt, the Premier, announced a $25 million investment package in the House of Assembly last week.

Mr Burt, who is also the Minister of Finance, said the initiative “reflects our commitment to invest in tackling the social challenges facing Bermuda”, including the “growing challenge of mental health”.

Ms Madeiros said: “[The investment] represents a much needed infusion of resources into mental health, substance abuse intervention and trauma counselling services; areas that are vital to the wellbeing of our entire community.

“The Government’s recognition of the mental health needs across all segments of our population mirrors the work we do every day at Solstice.”

She added: “The expansion of trauma counselling to break intergenerational cycles of violence, along with greater attention to substance abuse programmes, is essential in addressing not only the immediate mental health needs but also the long-term resilience of our society.”

Ms Madeiros said Solstice, which provides counselling services and psychological assessments for adults and children as young as 3, was “particularly pleased with the Government’s emphasis on reducing stigma around mental health and delivering care and compassion – values that are at the core of our practice.

“Mental health challenges affect individuals from all walks of life and it is crucial that our community continues to prioritise open, inclusive dialogue and care that is free from judgment.”

She explained: “By providing accessible mental healthcare and trauma services, investing in the education and training of Bermudians and prioritising early intervention for children, we believe we can continue to contribute to a healthier, more connected Bermuda.

“We applaud this significant step forward and are excited to work alongside others to build a future where mental wellness is a community priority.”
