A new government senator said Bermuda has several opportunities for progress, such as an investment by Google in the island’s economy.

Mr Fubler, who was appointed senator last month by Rena Lalgie, the Governor, added that over the next five years, measures such as the implementation of tax reform and the corporate income tax would deliver benefits to the island.

He told the Upper House in his maiden speech that the island’s growth could be measured by its gross domestic product figures and increasing international business jobs, which were “definitely promising” signs of success.

He called on colleagues to reflect on success and challenged them to consider its varied definitions as manifested in their “inner visions”.

Mr Fubler urged senators to observe how their definitions of success changed over time, from their neighbourhoods to their home parishes and the island as a whole.

He added that everyone shared similar visions of success.

He said: “I think it is imperative that we continue to expand the scope of our definition of success”, adding that “national self-actualisation should be the goal”.

Mr Fubler said the effects of national-level policies could be seen within a government’s first or second term.

“We can realise our success on the timescale of decades, not generations,” he said, adding that politicians should be intentional in their work.

“I propose that we expand our methodologies to better measure how far we have come and how much farther we have to go to ensure success is realised by more of us.”

He said people must acknowledge that progress was not a destination but a journey, and engage in it “wholeheartedly”.
