Legislators head to final sitting of House before new year
Tougher clean air legislation with “nuisance” provisions is headed for review today in the House of Assembly.
Walter Roban, the home affairs minister, will open the debate on the Clean Air Amendment Act 2024.
Other items for today’s sitting include two Bills tabled last week by David Burt, the Premier and Minister of Finance.
In total, five pieces of legislation will be considered.
The Bermuda Monetary Authority Amendment Act 2024 will update the definition of “specified securities” in the regulator’s principal Act, provide for “a waiver or reduction of fees payable in relation to the innovation hub”, and update relevant fees in investment legislation and anti-money-laundering and antiterrorist financing regulations
Housekeeping legislation in the form of the Companies Amendment Act 2024 will cover fees for exempted companies.
The Customs Department Amendment Act, brought by Michael Weeks, the national security minister, will update the law concerning the handling of information collected by the department.
It includes protections laid out in the Personal Information Protection Act, which comes into force at the start of 2025.
Jaché Adams, the Junior Minister of Finance, is to open the debate on the Corporate Entities (Miscellaneous) Amendment Act 2024, which updates a string of business-related legislation in light of the looming corporate income tax.
Mr Burt will deliver a statement on the pre-Budget report, to be tabled in the House, while Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch, the public works minister, will address MPs on the topic of closed schools.
Jason Hayward, the Minister of Economy and Labour, is to speak on guidelines for residential schemes in Hamilton.
Tinée Furbert, the seniors minister, will update the House on the National Seniors Strategy, 2024-30, while transport minister Wayne Furbert will speak on air service development for the island.
Kim Wilson, the health minister, will speak on mental wellbeing during the festive season, and Crystal Caesar, the Cabinet Office minister, will give a statement on updates at the planning department.
