Premier signs condolence book for former US president
The island paid its respects to late US president Jimmy Carter at a ceremony held at the American Consulate on Friday.
David Burt signed a commemorative book of condolence in memory of Mr Carter, who died on December 29 at the age of 100.
Following the signing, the Premier said: “On behalf of the people of Bermuda, I was humbled to pay my respects on the passing of former president Jimmy Carter.
“The longstanding relationship between Bermuda and the United States is one of mutual respect, shared values and collaboration.
“President Carter was a true friend of Bermuda who upheld these ideals, and we join with the US and those around the world in grieving the passing of this great patriot.”
Mr Carter served as US president between 1976 and 1980.
A government spokeswoman said: “The Premier’s signing of the condolence book is a poignant moment that underscores Bermuda’s respect for the legacy of president Carter and Bermuda's support of the United States during their time of national mourning.”
Six days of funeral observances for Mr Carter began yesterday in Georgia and the US will hold a national day of mourning this Thursday.
