Economic think-tank rebranded as Bermuda Forward
A think-tank committed to protecting the economy has been reinstated with a rebrand.
Bermuda First has become Bermuda Forward, with fresh leadership and a shift in vision.
A spokeswoman for the group said that the change reflected a new mission to put Bermudians at the forefront of the country’s economy.
She added: “While remaining a non-political partner and trusted thought leadership entity with the Bermuda Government, Bermuda Forward will focus on recommending practical and measurable strategies that empower Bermudians to thrive in an evolving economy.”
Bermuda First was launched in April 2009 to see how best to stave off economic recession.
It was co-chaired by the Premier and Opposition leader of the time, but petered out over the years as government support withered before relaunching in 2017.
The organisation’s spokeswoman said that, as Bermuda Forward, it would focus on developing Bermudian-led businesses in both existing and emerging industries.
The group will also aim to get the island further involved in global economic trends, particularly in the fields of digital assets and artificial intelligence, while brainstorming solutions for problems in healthcare and education reform.
The spokeswoman said: “Bermuda Forward’s methodology emphasises a collaborative approach, leveraging the strengths of local talent and international expertise to craft innovative and balanced solutions.
“The organisation remains committed to maintaining strong partnerships with international business stakeholders, whose insights are critical to Bermuda’s ongoing success.”
Michael Branco has replaced Philip Butterfield as Bermuda Forward’s leader and is being assisted by deputy chairpersons Gita Blakeney Saltus and Azeem Khan.
They are now looking for an executive director to oversee daily operations.
Mr Butterfield led the body since 2017 and presented several papers and advisories to groups such as the Bermuda Cabinet that helped to shape government policies.
On his predecessor, Mr Branco said: “Philip’s leadership has provided a strong foundation for us to build upon.
“It is an honour and a responsibility to continue this journey, delivering impactful solutions to drive Bermuda’s progress and prosperity.”
Ms Saltus said that investing in young talent will become a crucial factor moving forward.
She said: “The future of Bermuda depends on the talents and vision of the next generation.
“We encourage young leaders to step forward and take part in shaping our shared future.”
