Governor departs: ‘She has served with distinction’
A farewell ceremony was held today outside LF Wade International Airport’s departure area for Rena Lalgie, the Governor.
Ms Lalgie made history in December 2020 as the first Black person and the first woman to be sworn in to the role.
Officials including David Burt, the Premier, attended to see off Ms Lalgie along with Jacob Hawkins, her husband.
She was received by Tom Oppenheim, the Deputy Governor, Opposition leader Jarion Richardson, Chief Justice Larry Mussenden and Major Marc Telemaque, the Secretary to the Cabinet.
Mr Burt spoke after her departure, stating: “Governor Lalgie's contributions have been welcomed in our community and she has left an enduring legacy.
“She has served Bermuda with distinction, and her departure marks the end of a significant chapter in the island’s history.”
He added: “On behalf of the Government and the people of Bermuda, we express our heartfelt gratitude and wish her continued success and fulfilment in her future endeavours.”
Andrew Murdoch, her successor in the post, is to arrive on the island this month.
