The One Bermuda Alliance was joined by the Progressive Labour Party to condemn vandalism and other destructive actions ahead of the General Election.

Ben Smith, the OBA’s deputy leader, said a banner that endorsed Douglas De Couto, the party’s candidate for Warwick North East (Constituency 25), was installed on private property but was cut from its frame and thrown on the ground.

He said the act “required heavy duty tools and planning ahead of time”, and called for all political candidates to condemn it.

Mr Smith added: “We invite them to join us in asking their members and supporters to operate in a constructive manner focused on the needs of Bermudians and the merits of the various plans proposed by the parties and candidates.”

Joanne Ball-Burgess, who will run for the PLP against Dr De Couto, said the actions did “not reflect the values we all cherish as a community and have no place in our democracy”.

She added: “As we move through this election period, we encourage all the people of Bermuda to engage in respectful and constructive dialogue.

“Our commitment remains to a fair, peaceful and open democratic process, one where every voice is heard and every candidate can campaign freely.

“Let’s continue to uphold the spirit of unity, respect, and shared progress that makes Bermuda special.”

Independent candidate Justin Mathias will face Dr DeCouto and Ms Ball-Burgess in the constituency on February 18.
