Dwayne Robinson 'looking forward’ after win
Dwayne Robinson has taken the seat of Southampton East Central (Constituency 30) for the One Bermuda Alliance.
He was announced as the winner with 468 votes, beating out Progressive Labour Party candidate Mischa Fubler who attracted 300 votes.
Although the polling station at Vernon Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church had only three bystanders, cries of elation could be heard as Mr Robinson accepted the vote.
“I am just very blessed and honoured to have the faith of Constituency 30,” he said. “This is a very stunning result. I am deeply honoured, deeply gratified and very, very proud of the work that was done.
“I’m looking forward to getting the work started.”
Mr Robinson, a longtime senator, first entered politics in September 2018 under the OBA, and was appointed a member of the Senate in November that same year by then Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier.
Mr Robinson represented the OBA during the 2020 General Election while running in Warwick West (Constituency 28). He attracted 329 votes, but lost to the PLP’s Dennis Lister III, who held the seat with 498 votes.
Mr Robinson left the Senate following the defeat and returned to the post in 2023.
During this time away, he climbed the ranks of the OBA and was elected Deputy Co-Chair in 2022.
During their respective campaigns, Mr Robinson and Mr Fubler found themselves agreeing in several areas.
Mr Robinson said last night that he was willing to work with “anybody who has the best interests of Bermuda in their heart,” and added that Mr Fubler was “definitely” one of those people.
He thanked the people of Southampton East Central for their votes, adding that “this is just the beginning”.
Mr Robinson said: “It’s just been such a journey and such a path that we have all taken together.
“I look forward to getting back out, seeing you all and earning every single vote that you’ve placed in me today.”
PLP backbencher Jason Wade, won the seat in 2020 with 486 votes against the 400 received by Leah Scott, of the OBA.
Mr Fubler, who was unveiled last September as the PLP’s candidate for the constituency, ran on a platform of social and economic justice.
He had represented the PLP in the Smith’s South by-election in October 2023 and gained 167 votes, but lost out to the OBA’s Ben Smith, who received 457 votes.
He was sworn in as a Government senator on November 27 last year to replace Leslie Robinson, who died about a month prior, at the age of 57.
He became the Junior Minister of the Cabinet Office and the Ministry of Public Works the following day.
Mr Fubler admitted last night that the results were “not the outcome [he] was hoping for,” but appreciated the people’s support.
He assured the public that he would still be active in politics.
“To the 300 people who voted for me, thank you so much for putting your trust in me to represent you,” he said. “Unfortunately it didn’t go the way we wanted, but maybe we’ll have a different result next time.”
