Two teams of youth-led activists have called on the public to get involved with the creation of Bermuda’s first Voters Bill of Rights.

Bermuda Youth Connect and Bermuda Is Love have joined forces to promote the new bill as it gets drafted by the Voters Rights Association.

Demands within the Bill include the right to absentee voting and fixed-term elections.

A spokeswoman for Bermuda Youth Connect said: “As a reminder to the public, voter rights Bills and Acts have been a turning point for democratic expansion and enfranchisement.

“In the United States, the Voters Rights Act of 1965 was landmark legislation which prohibited racial discrimination in voting.”

The BYC spokeswoman said that calls for voter reform were renewed soon after the 2025 General Election was called in January, when many young voters would be off island.

This prompted the VRA to send a letter to all election candidates outlining what the group wanted in this Voters Bill of Rights.

These articles can be found on the association’s Facebook page.

The Voters Rights Association was created in 2007 by Stuart Hayward and Geoff Parker Sr.

Its mission was “to provide a voice and a vehicle within the political process for voters to participate more fully in the policy decisions that affect their collective lives”.
