David Burt discusses collaboration with Marc Bean
David Burt, the Premier, met with the leaders of the One Bermuda Alliance and the Free Democratic Movement last week in the aftermath of the General Election.
A government spokeswoman said the meetings were part of discussions intended to foster collaboration and unity on key issues.
The spokeswoman said Mr Burt had talks with Marc Bean, the leader of the FDM and former leader of the Progressive Labour Party, on Friday.
“Their conversation focused on identifying opportunities to improve the lives of Bermudians through constructive co-operation,” the spokeswoman said. “Both the Premier and Mr Bean underscored the importance of finding common ground to address Bermuda’s pressing challenges.
“In the meeting, Premier Burt complimented the FDM leader for his party’s focus on the issues during the recent election campaign, which is important for fostering debate.”
Mr Burt said the meeting was an “important step forward” in efforts to build a “stronger, fairer, more united Bermuda”.
He added: “We may not always agree, but what matters is that we find common ground where we can, push each other to be better, and never lose sight of the fact that the challenges we face belong to all of us.
“At the end of the day, the success of Bermuda isn’t about one party; it's about what we can achieve together for our island home.”
Mr Burt also met with OBA leader Jarion Richardson to review the dates for the Convening of the Legislature and the 2025-26 Budget.
He said that during the meeting the pair discussed the need for the legislature to be “more active in its oversight role” through its committees as well as during House sessions.
Mr Burt said: “This was a recommendation from the Sage Commission and a commitment in our 2017 platform. We made the necessary changes in 2018 to ensure these committees could be appointed. Yet, after finally being formed in 2024, they still haven’t met. That must change.
“Accountability is a shared responsibility, and we must ensure the mechanisms for oversight are not just in place, but actually used. That’s why we both agreed on the need to ensure these committees fulfil their role.”
The government spokeswoman described the meetings as the first of several planned to follow-through on the administration’s pledge to foster a co-operative approach to governance.
Mr Burt said before the election that, should the PLP win, he would reach out to both the FDM and independent candidates to determine how they could work together to benefit the island.
He also said that he would continue to work with the OBA as the Official Opposition.
