Three independent senate appointments announced
A new senator was announced this afternoon for the Upper House among appointments made by Andrew Murdoch, the Governor.
Tawana Tannock, a former chairwoman of the Bermuda Human Rights Commission, replaced independent member Kiernan Bell, who chose to step down when the legislature was dissolved on January 8 with the announcement of the General Election.
Joan Dillas-Wright, who was senate president, has been reappointed along with John Wight.
Mr Murdoch called for expressions of interest to sit in the Upper House on January 31, with “a large number” received and considered.
The Senate has a complement of 11 members, all of whom are appointed by the Governor.
Five come on the recommendation of the Premier and three from the Leader of the Opposition, with the three independents chosen by the Governor.
Mr Murdoch said each of the senators would bring unique experience to the work of the Upper House.
He thanked Ms Bell for her two years’ service.
Ms Tannock, a lawyer and insurance executive, is the managing director of Skuld Mutual Protection and Indemnity Association (Bermuda) Ltd.
She said: “I appreciate this exciting opportunity to be one of the independent voices in the Senate and to serve our entire community, particularly those who feel disenfranchised, under-represented or uninformed regarding the role of the Senate.
“I encourage public engagement in the work of the legislature, and welcome comments, questions and concerns on legislation and senate activities, to my senate e-mail address.”
She added: “I pledge to be responsive and transparent, continuing my record of advocating for and participating in community engagement initiatives.”
