Bermudian students given a taste of UK insurance market
Four Bermudian students will gain some experience of the international insurance industry in the UK over the next two weeks. The quartet are taking part in the Bermuda Foundation for Insurance Studies Summer Intern Programme, which gets under way tomorrow.Three of the students have never visited the UK before, so they will not only be learning all about the London insurance market, but also what life in England is like. As in past years, the students will be staying at International Student House near Regents Park.Antionay Tankard, studying finance at Howard University in Washington, DC; Victoria Borges, who graduated in May this year in finance from St Mary’s University, Halifax; Robert Jardine, studying financial economics at St Andrew’s University, in the UK; and Sanae Russell, studying risk management at St John’s University, in New York are the participants. The intensive syllabus usually involves meeting with two different companies and insurancerelated organisations each day for work-shadowing and presentations. In addition, each student has to prepare a report on a company of their choice along the lines of the Bermuda Insurance Diploma Market Research Paper. As a group the interns are required do or see at least 10 places of interest for educational purposes as well as fun, such as a boat trip to Greenwich or finding where Edward Lloyd opened his Coffee House in 1688.On their return the London students will make a presentation to the board of trustees and BFIS member representatives, along with the Bermuda and Chicago interns. For more information on the BFIS Intro-to-Insurance Summer Intern Programmes, visit www.bfis.bm
