AIG property-casualty unit Chartis has laid off four employees in Bermuda and plans to cut at least six more jobs this year as part of a reorganisation.Chartis Bermuda, located in the former AIG building, now Chartis House, currently employs over 150 people.Chartis vice-president of media relations Marie Ali told The Royal Gazette yesterday: “As part of Chartis’ global reorganisation, Chartis Bermuda Ltd has been impacted by the loss of four positions, two of which were held by Bermudians.“Through the end of 2012, we anticipate further losses impacting six positions currently held by Bermudians.”Apart from the actual redundancies, an industry source said they understood more positions at Chartis were being relocated from Bermuda.In January, Chartis announced that it had “aligned its geographic structure to enhance execution of the company’s commercial and consumer strategies and to add greater focus on its growth economies initiatives”. It said it was deploying its global resources “in a manner that will create a more efficient regional framework”.Within that framework Chartis reorganised under three major geographic areas: the Americas, Asia and EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa).Peter Eastwood, president and CEO of the US and Canada, was to assume responsibility for the Americas, which included the US, Canada, Latin America and Bermuda.It was back in 2009 that US-bailed-out insurer AIG spun off its property-casualty insurance business and named the new company Chartis.The US Treasury on Monday said it was trimming its ownership stake in AIG to 61 percent from 70 percent by selling more shares of the insurer’s common stock.
