A group of students from Appalachian State University in North Carolina have been given an insight into how Bermuda became one of the world’s most important reinsurance hubs.

The Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers hosted the students for a one-hour primer on the rise of the reinsurance sector in Bermuda during the last 25 years.

“Helping connect Bermuda to the next generation of insurance industry professionals carries our risk innovation history forward,” said Leila Madeiros, Abir’s deputy director, who led the class.

“We are approaching the 25th anniversary of the reinsurance class of 1993, the real commencement of the modern Bermuda market.”

The visiting students were taking part in the Brantley Risk and Insurance Centre’s “International Markets” annual May circuit to Bermuda.

The immersion in Bermuda is being led by David Marlett, the Centre’s managing director and faculty director of the Wilson Scholars Programme.
