BFIS students prepare for London experience
BFIS is sending a team of students to experience the London insurance market for the tenth year through its Intro to Insurance Programme.
This year’s students, Ciara Burrows, Zachary Friesen, Kimika Jackson and Daniel Oatley, are all BFIS Scholars with Ciara in her final co-op year of law and economics at Waterloo University; Zachary just graduated from Trinity Western University where he studied finance; Kimika is entering her senior year at St John’s University majoring in quantitative risk and insurance; and Daniel who has just graduated from Warwick University with a degree in philosophy, politics and economics.
BFIS trustee Mark Berry, managing director, XL Catlin Leadership Council, and 2017 London intern Dominick Wright, met with the interns at their briefing lunch in the BFIS offices yesterday to give them advice on how to make the most of this opportunity and answer any questions they had.
During the short and intense programme from July 2 to July 13, the students will be hosted by Allied World, Aon Benfield, Axis, Chubb Tempest Re, Clyde & Co, Condie Risk Consulting, Hiscox Insurance, Lancashire Insurance, Lloyd’s of London, Markel, Marsh, RenaissanceRe, Sompo International, Swiss Re, Talbot Underwriting, Thomas Miller, Tokio Marine Kiln, WillisTowersWatson and XL Catlin.
BFIS alumni in London have arranged an after-work networking party to include the interns so they can find out from other Bermudians what it is like to work or study in London.
Cathy Lapsley, BFIS executive director, said: “We have found that these two short weeks can make an immeasurable difference to the students and help them to clearly focus on the direction their career will take.
“The number of students who have participated in the BFIS intern programmes totals 158, with almost all of those who have graduated working in the insurance sector.”
“It takes a great deal of organisation and planning to co-ordinate these programmes and BFIS appreciates the enthusiastic response we receive from the hosting companies and their staff, many having hosted our interns every year since the programme started.”
A presentation by all the 2018 intern groups will take place at lunchtime on Monday, July 30 at KPMG. Students interested in applying for the 2019 programmes are welcome to attend and should e-mail BFIS at info@bfis.bm to register.
The BFIS Overseas Intern Programmes are sponsored by XL Catlin.
