Six Bermudian students have been selected to participate in a summer internship programme at Ariel Re, the global reinsurer.

The company said Alison Hyland, Emma Stegmann, Giovanni Hollis, Kieran Malott, Lauren Way and Sophia Stevens will learn about a variety of roles within the sector, including operations and finance, catastrophe modelling, underwriting, claims and actuarial science.

They are based in Bermuda, and some have travelled to Britain to experience working in Ariel Re’s London office, the company said.

As well as learning how individual departments work and attending daily meetings, Ariel Re said, the interns have been tasked with several projects, including reviewing the company website and proposing how this could be redeveloped.

“Ariel Re has a strong commitment to developing the next generation of reinsurance talent right here in Bermuda,” human resources head Lindsay Hyland said.

“When we redeveloped our culture in 2021, we said that we wanted to be known as an ‘academy firm’ — a place where the best in the industry work and come to enhance their knowledge and careers.

“I am delighted that we are able to meet this commitment and offer opportunities to young Bermudians seeking a career in reinsurance.

“Our hope is that some of our interns will eventually join us permanently and help fulfil our vision of being the premier manager of reinsurance risk.”
