More than 80 Artex employees visited six rest homes across the Island as part of their Giving Tuesday this week.

Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving with individuals encouraged to support good causes and communities that mean so much to them. It is a day to celebrate and encourage giving in all its forms.

Artex employees spent the day involved with many activities to bring joy to the seniors — from gardening, painting and cleaning around the homes, to socialising, doing arts and crafts and playing games with residents.

It is projected that seniors aged 65 and over will grow to nearly one quarter of Bermuda’s population by 2026, according to the Minister of Economy and Labour.

An Artex spokeswoman said: “Artex takes great pride in being part of the Bermuda community where its employees live and work, and made the decision to focus its resources and community efforts this Giving Tuesday on providing help to local rest homes in a response to the growing needs of this ageing population.”

Artex volunteers visited the following rest homes: House of Esther in St.George’s, Packwood Home in Sandy’s, GreenLeaf in Sandy’s, Lorraine Nursing Home in Warwick, Summerhaven in Smith’s Parish and Serenity Gardens Nursing Home in Devonshire.

Giving Tuesday began in the US in 2012 as a day to give back, falling on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.

But social media and collaboration now inspire millions of people around the world to use the day to celebrate the charities and communities that move them.

Giving Tuesday is already recognised officially in more than 60 countries through volunteering, donations of food, clothes and money, community events such as a street or park clean-ups and many other useful and thoughtful events.
