Veteran climate reporter to deliver keynote at risk summit
A bestselling author and award-winning journalist who has been at the forefront of climate reporting for more than two decades is to deliver a keynote address on climate risk at next month’s Bermuda Risk Summit.
Coming on the heels of last month’s devastating wildfires in California, Jeff Goodell will deliver a keynote entitled Extreme Heat and Wildfire: Navigating the Realities of Climate Change.
The Bermuda Business Development Agency, presenter of the summit, said Mr Goodell’s address will explore the growing frequency and severity of extreme heat and wildfires, how these escalating risks are affecting public health, ecosystems, economies and global stability, and the urgent need for innovation and co-ordinated action to build resilience in a warming world.
His latest book, The Heat Will Kill You First: Life and Death on a Scorched Planet, explores the rising threats of extreme heat and wildfires and their devastating consequences.
A BDA spokeswoman said: “Sponsored by Aspen, this is a must-attend session for industry professionals, policymakers and global leaders seeking to understand the far-reaching implications of climate volatility and environmental risk.
“In Bermuda, where 75 per cent of global property and catastrophe reinsurance is managed, the link between Mr Goodell’s research and the industry’s role in disaster recovery and financial protection is undeniable.
“As California and other wildfire-prone regions grapple with record-breaking losses, Bermuda-based reinsurers are absorbing billions in claims, ensuring communities can rebuild and recover.”
Christian Dunleavy, president of Aspen Group, said: “Climate change isn’t a distant threat — it’s happening now, and the economic impact is staggering. As insurers, we play a fundamental role in providing the financial safety net that allows businesses and communities to recover.
“Jeff Goodell’s reporting highlights the urgency of these challenges and the critical need for forward-thinking solutions. His insights will be invaluable for understanding what lies ahead and how industries, including reinsurance, can prepare for an uncertain future.”
The BDA spokeswoman added: “While Mr Goodell’s keynote will focus on the scientific and societal impact of climate change, it underscores the critical role of insurance in navigating today’s climate crisis.
“The discussion will continue in a dedicated industry session where experts will explore the evolving role of reinsurance and risk management in responding to climate-driven disasters.”
The Bermuda Risk Summit will be held from March 10 to 12 at the Hamilton Princess & Beach Club.
Mr Goodell will deliver his keynote on March 11 at 3.45pm.
