Cathedral needs more repair work

week to discover what work needs to be done to prevent further erosion of the water-damaged building.

The Cathedral raised more than $150,000 from the recent "roofle'' prize draw to give away a condominium, but administrators admit they are not quite sure what the full extent of the problem is.

In the early 1990s, $3 million was raised to repair the roof of the landmark building in Hamilton, but the work has obviously not resolved the problem.

Stones in the Cathedral are now eroding and water from the roof and walls seeps into the building. Electrical works and other repairs are also needed.

Canon Keith Wassall said yesterday: "There is a massive amount of water in the Warrior Chapel in particular and that affects the stonework.

"We are particularly vulnerable on the south side and the stonework is rotting.

"I don't think it's in danger of collapsing, but I fell that X years down the road, unless something is addressed, there could be questions about its possible safety. That's one of the things we are trying to respond to and address.

"We have problems and they could be bigger ones, and we are trying to be responsive and address the issue.

"We don't really know what the problem is with the roof. The meeting with the architect will decide what work is needed.'' The roofle draw for a three bedroomed condominium valued at $335,000 raised $150,000 and was won by Robin Mayor, a partner with law firm Conyers, Dill and Pearman.

The Cathedral agreed to give away five percent of the proceeds and the Anglican Bishop of Bermuda, the Rt Revd. Ewen Ratteray, handed over cheques to two charities yesterday -- the Physical Abuse Centre and the ISIS Foundation, a Bermuda-based charity which carries out overseas development projects in Uganda and Nepal.

Bishop Ratteray said: "The cathedral vestry has asked that our gift be used to provide services to AIDS sufferers in out-lying areas close to Kiwoko Hospital in Uganda.

"We offer our thanks and appreciation to all who sponsored and supported the event, and due to a number of private donations we were able to raise these funds, the major portion of which will be put towards getting the cathedral roof fixed, electrical work and other essential repairs.''
