East End food bank for area's needy opens
throughout St. George's pitching in to provide the goods.
The food bank, organised by the Salvation Army and the East End Ministerial Association, is meant to help the needy of St. George's and ease pressure on the Salvation Army's food bank in Hamilton.
Food collected at the churches will be distributed Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Salvation Army on Governor's Alley.
"It's been our desire to do this for some time,'' said Major Gilbert St. Onge of the Salvation Army. "This will help a lot of people who come in on the bus from St. George's to the Hamilton food bank.'' Capt. Rick Pollard of the St. George's Corps noted that the food bank will also ease the pressure on the Hamilton food bank to supply people from around the Island.
"This is not just the Salvation Army's endeavour,'' he stressed. "This comes from the East End Ministerial Association -- from each church here.'' Each of the churches has been collecting food for about two weeks now, he said, and the response has been good.
Each church has assigned a coordinator who will forward requests for assistance to the Salvation Army.
