The Bermuda Islamic Centre is calling for MPs to give greater priority to morality.

It wants a referendum to decide if MPs should have to "disclose their standard of morality'' and readiness to put God's "laws'' first.

The centre is organising a petition calling for such a referendum.

It follows concern over the late the Hon. John Stubbs' bill which decriminalised homosexuality.

"The recent (and implied future) relaxation of the laws relating to morality shocked this community and showed us that Members of Parliament and Senators have absolutely no regard for the opinion of the populace whom they pledged to serve, and even less regard for the Laws of God,'' the petition says.

"We have the power to elect our representatives in a democratic manner. We also have the right to demand proper representation of our views. They have not been elected by us with a blank cheque to write as they please but to address our concerns, after consultation with us.

"We will not allow the future of our progenies to be wiped out by immorality.''
