Stand up for something

April 14, 2009

Dear Sir,

After reading this story, it proves that all is not lost in this world. It also proves how people (legislators, etc.) bow to the easiest way out to save their positions by not making waves instead of taking a stance to save tradition and faith. It was the faith of the founders of the United States that helped to create the new world, and now, because atheists want to remove anything that connects Christian people to their Christian beliefs, their demands are bowed to. This is not democracy – and let's face it, if we all abided by the Ten Commandants, surely this would be a much better world to live in.

This story, which is partly based on facts, is called "The Sneeze" is as follows:

"They walked in tandem, each of the 92 students filing into the already crowded auditorium. With their rich maroon gowns flowing and the traditional caps, they looked almost as grown up as they felt.

"Dads swallowed hard behind broad smiles and Moms freely brushed away tears. But sadly, this class would not pray during the Commencement service – not by choice, but because of a recent court ruling prohibiting it.

"The principal and several students were careful to stay within the guidelines allowed by the ruling. They gave inspirational and challenging speeches, but no one mentioned divine guidance and no one asked for blessings on the graduates or their families. The speeches were nice, but they were routine ... until the final speech received a standing ovation.

"A solitary student walked proudly to the microphone. He stood still and silent for just a moment, and then, it happened. All 92 students, every single one of them, suddenly sneezed! And the student on stage simply looked at the audience and said, "God bless you, each and every one of you!' And he walked offstage while the audience exploded into applause.

"This graduating class had found a unique way to invoke God's blessing on their future with or without the court's approval … Friendship is not a big thing, it's a million little things".

So you see, Mr. Editor, when people stand up for what is right, lots can be accomplished – but, if you don't stand up for something, as the saying goes, "You will fall for anything!" It is way past time for Bermudians to stand up for what is right!
